Christians have everything to gain and nothing to lose when they stand up for Jesus. In his book, 70 Years of Miracles, Richard H. Harvey shared a firsthand account of his experience in a Chemistry class at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania, in the 1920’s. Harvey said the professor, a Dr. Lee, was a deist who gave lectures against prayer each year.
In one of the class sessions, Dr. Lee said he was going to drop a glass flask on the floor and asked if anyone would like to try proving that prayer was real by praying first that the flask would not break. Richard Harvey volunteered and prayed. The professor dropped the flask, and it rolled off his shoe to the floor without breaking. The class cheered, and the professor stopped lecturing against prayer.
Richard could have thought to himself, Why doesn’t somebody do something? Doesn’t anyone else believe in God here? Instead of waiting for someone else to speak up, he did it himself. God heard his prayer and used the situation for His glory.
Each of us will have situations like the one in which Richard found himself. God wants us to be willing and ready to stand up and stand tall when given the opportunity. When we do this, He will show Himself strong on our behalf.
Maybe you have a town hall meeting in your community, and you will be discussing whether to allow the teaching of intelligent design in the public schools. Perhaps there are people who want to know what you think about gay marriage. There could be a teacher in your school who makes regular insults about God and the Bible. God is calling you to stand up for Him today. Do it, even if you have to stand all by yourself. (You won’t really be alone, because God will stand with you.) It will be the greatest decision you have ever made.
