For the first time in four days, Lazarus took a breath of fresh air. Then he opened his eyes and saw light. His ears heard the noise of a crowd of people which had gathered to comfort his grieving sisters. The blood in his body instantly warmed as his heart began to pump. This formerly dead man was now more alive than he had ever been before. What had caused his transformation from death to life? Lazarus, once bound by the law of death, had been released by a higher law — the words of Jesus.

The raising of Lazarus proved that Jesus has the final word on every situation we will ever face. Therefore, there is no such thing as a hopeless situation. Sometimes we look at the way our circumstances have worked out and we rule out all possibility that they will work in our favor. This is slamming the door in the face of God. Instead of giving up hope, we should be confident that it isn’t over until He has spoken.

In our world of natural laws, we have come to expect that A + B will always equal C: Cancer always leads to death. A lost job always means we will lose our home. Rejection by a guy or girl always means we’ll never get married. We forget that at any time, Jesus may intervene to bring about an outcome far different (and better) than we would have thought possible. He can do that, because He has the last word.

Are there some difficult situations you are facing right now? Maybe you have been looking for work over the past several months, but nothing has turned up. Perhaps you have been trusting God to provide a mate, but He still hasn’t made His will clear to you. Don’t give up yet, Christian. Wait for Him to speak in your circumstances. He has the last word.
