Today’s Scripture: Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 1 Peter 1:8
I had not realized that people could have so much fun tearing up a room!
For twenty-three years, the carpet in our auditorium had faithfully performed its task, while getting trampled on by camels and donkeys in our Christmas Musical, surviving the juice from shrimp and other seafood during banquets, and enduring preschool-aged children running between the large inflatables that are set up during the week. Now, it was time for the carpet to be replaced. After the evening service, the men and women of the Quentin Road Baptist Church joyfully stacked the chairs and began tearing out the carpet. Soon, the sounds of ripping fabric and metal floor scrapers mingled with laughter.
Recently we hosted a Starting Point event for folks who are new to Quentin Road. I had several attendees tell me that they were so in love with the church because the people are real, they are outgoing, and there is a joy that shines through. There is a real joy in serving Christ. That is not to say that everyone who attends is perfect. However, for 47 years, we have had solid Bible teaching and an encouragement to live for God. It really makes a difference, and it shows in the lives of our people. The love that God has for us is revealed in the lives of believers who are simply being real and not putting on a show. There is a rejoicing “…with joy unspeakable and full of glory.” When you are with other believers who are like-minded, have reality, and love the Lord, it is a joyful time – even when you are destroying the auditorium carpet!
