Today’s Scripture: Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Proverbs¬†20:1

One of the main arguments I hear from Christians regarding drinking is the claim that Jesus turned water into wine. In the past, we have looked how that was not intoxicating wine but was simply grape juice. However, today I want to look at the effects of alcohol and allow you to be the judge of whether it is good or not.

It is estimated that in 2010, the cost of alcohol on our society was 249 billion dollars. This doesn’t even take into account the many lives that were lost. Between the billions of dollars spent on police and the justice system, medical costs due to drinking, loss of productivity, and motor-vehicle accidents, the cost grows every year.

How can we sit back and ignore the fact that alcohol is destroying our country? The advertisements are funny, cute, and even make it look fun, but in reality, it is a depressant which dulls the senses. Alcohol is used as an escape from the problems of life, but in fact, all it does is create new ones!

Wine is a deceiver. Although it looks appealing, there is no substance-it’s a mirage. When we allow ourselves to get caught up in it, we will be disappointed when we realize it cannot give what it offers. God warns us about the problems it causes and tells us not even to look upon it (Proverbs¬†23:29-31). God’s Word is clear on this issue. Don’t be a fool and succumb to the temptation to make an excuse to drink.
