Today’s Scripture: And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. Luke 6:31

Encouragement – we all need it, and we all enjoy it. Very few people actually encourage others regularly. If you work all day on a special task, you like to hear people compliment your handiwork. However, if your child works hard on a school project, do you compliment his/her work?

When you do a favor for someone else, you appreciate it when they go out of their way to show gratitude, yet when someone does a favor for you, are you an encouragement to them? You may have a friend that you can go to with a need and they’ll always try to arrange their schedule to help, talk, or pray with you. Are you that kind of friend to someone else?

You work hard to prepare a Sunday School lesson and several people come up to you and thank you for that lesson. Do you ever thank your pastor for his sermons? I’m sure there is some area in your life where you can be more encouraging.

If you are going through a hard trial, may I encourage you to give the Golden Rule a shot? If you are at a time in your life where you need encouragement, I suggest you start encouraging people. As the Golden Rule states, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

Find something in their life that you can encourage. You will reap what you sow and people will be an encouragement to you. Another benefit of encouraging others is you’ll start focusing on the positive things and being grateful for the people around you. That alone will be an encouragement and will help take the focus off the trial at hand.
