Today’s Scripture: Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. Ephesians 5:17

The trunk of the Buick was full. Our daughter Amanda was packed in the back seat with the cooler, a bunch of bedding, and tons of books on CD. This was our first two week vacation since coming to Ohio 4.5 years ago to pastor the Chili Crossroads Bible Church. Julie, Amanda, and I tent camped in Tennessee for a week near the Smoky Mountains. Then we were off to see Cumberland Falls in Kentucky. But we passed an outlet mall on the way. The girls were shopping-deprived after a week in a tent, so you can guess how much time we spent there. When we finally pulled into the park in Kentucky, it was late in the day, and we were tired.

We knew there was a chance of storms in the forecast, but I was too tired to think about it.

I quickly selected a campsite near the bathrooms. Happy wife, happy life.

It wasn’t until the lightning started that I realized I had pitched our tent under some big trees. It stormed all night. We didn’t sleep much. Water dripped into the tent and made a little river through the middle. Did I mention that our tent site was also right by the only street light in the whole area? It was bright as day in the tent all night even without the lightning. I could literally read a book in the tent all night without a light.

I lay awake and thought about the girl in Wisconsin who was killed this summer when lightning struck the tree over her tent. A limb broke and fell on her.

Putting a tent under a tree and a light pole when storms are in the forecast isn’t very wise.

God tells us to be wise. Spiritual storms are in the forecast, not just a slight chance but 100% sure.

What are some areas where you are spiritually vulnerable? Take a quick look around before committing to your next step in life. Understand God’s will. You might avoid a wet and dangerous night.
