Today’s Scripture: He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Psalm 91:4

A terrible tragedy, an out of place foreigner, a grieving mother-in-law, and a surprising proposal converge on the pages of Scripture to make one of the most memorable love stories ever penned.

After losing her spouse and choosing to uproot her entire life for the sake of her mother-in-law, Ruth, the Moabitess, likely shed many tears. Little did she know that God was already beginning to weave an amazing story together just for her. As she gleaned in the fields of her new hometown, she noticed a man named Boaz and took a liking to him. Boaz likewise noticed Ruth’s radiance. There was a spark. With each passing day, he saw more and more of her godliness and virtue. One day he promised her that as long as she gleaned in his fields, her needs would always be met. She fell on her face and asked, “Why are you showing me such grace?” He then shared from his heart why he admired her so much.

This romance went on for some time but there was no proposal. I am sure Boaz was thinking he was too old for her, and Ruth was thinking, ‘I’m sure there is a nearer kinsman.’ Amidst the uncertainty, Naomi suggested to Ruth that she propose to Boaz. Following tradition, that night she uncovered his feet and laid down. He awoke and put a corner of his cloak over her in agreement to her proposal of marriage. Ruth’s sorrow had blossomed into joy.

This story applies to us as believers today. Boaz is a picture of Christ and Ruth is a picture of the Church. Just as Boaz accepted and assured Ruth, Christ accepts us the moment we place our trust in Him. Then, every day, He assures us of His love and that He will always be there for us. Just as Boaz put Ruth under his cloak, our Kinsman Redeemer always has us under His wings.
