Today’s Scripture: But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Isaiah 64:8

There was once a man who had a huge boulder in front of his yard. The boulder was very big and would be impossible to move without tearing up his landscape. He grew tired of this large, unattractive distraction, wishing he could get rid of it somehow.

One day, the man got an idea. He would turn it into an object of art. He began working at it with a hammer and a variety of chisels. Day after day, he chipped away at it until it became a beautiful stone elephant. When he finished, it was an exquisite carving.

A neighbor came by one day and asked him, “How were you able to carve such a beautiful piece of stone?”

The man replied, “I just carved away at everything that didn’t look like an elephant.”

In the same way, God chips away at our character, removing all of the things that do not glorify Him. In the early stages of our Christian life, we find ourselves doing all kinds of things that are contrary to His will. But slowly, the hammer and chisel of circumstances mold us into the person God wants us to be.

Maybe you’re suffering through an overwhelming circumstance. You may not understand why God is allowing it to happen to you. But, rest assured that God is using this to shape you into something useful for Him. His hammer and chisel are transforming you from a useless boulder into a fine and exquisite work of art.
