Today’s Scripture: But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Daniel 1:8

Another great lesson that I have learned from the book of Daniel is that serving is no accident. I really believe that Daniel was a great example for us when he purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself. We need to purpose in our hearts that we will not defile ourselves.

Daniel took a stand when he could have easily gone with the flow. He was in Babylon, away from his family, and there was no one to tell him that he had to stick to the Jewish dietary laws that God had set up. These were important because the dietary laws set them apart as a chosen, peculiar people.

Daniel could have said, “It’s my time to have fun and experience other things,” but instead he purposed in his heart that he would obey God. Not only did he stand up for what was right, but he did it in a kind, gentle way that won him favor with the prince of the eunuchs. He did not throw a fit and make a big scene about the meat and wine they were being offered. He was gracious, thoughtful, and earned trust with those in charge.

Because of that, permission was granted for Daniel and his friends to eat just vegetables and water. God blessed Daniel for taking a stand for righteousness.

Is there an area in your life where you need to decide to take a stand? Ask God for the strength and courage, then purpose in your heart that you will do what is right.
