|Today’s Scripture: For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. I John 5:4|
On December 17, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright made history by becoming the first people to fly an airplane. The first flight lasted 12 seconds and traveled 120 feet in the air. They flew 3 more times that day, each time increasing the distance. The last flight traveled 852 feet in 59 seconds.
Wilbur Wright said, “This flight only lasted 12 seconds, but it was nevertheless the first in the history of the world in which a machine carrying a man had raised itself by its own power into the air in full flight, had sailed forward without reduction of speed, and had finally landed at a point as high as that from which it started.”
Many people thought overcoming the force of gravity with a heavier-than-air machine was impossible. So, too, many Christians think overcoming sin is impossible. Just as the power to overcome gravity doesn’t lie in us but in the airplane, the power to overcome sin doesn’t lie in us but in our Savior.
We can only have victory over sin when we are walking by faith. On our own, we are not able to resist the powers of gravity or sin; if we try, we will fall. Our faith in Christ is what both saves us and allows us to have the victory.
When people attempted to fly under their own power, they failed. If we try to live the Christian life in our own strength, we will fail, and our attempt at serving the Lord will end in frustration. If we yield ourselves in submission to the Holy Spirit, He will work through us. We need to realize the need to allow Christ to live through us (Galatians 2:20).
We have the victory over the penalty of sin through faith in our Savior, but we can also have the victory over the power of sin in our lives. Don’t be held down by the weight of sin; live by faith and see God’s power that overcomes the world.
