Have you ever searched for something important and couldn’t find it? But when you hunted for something else you found what you searched for earlier. This happened recently with a watch. As soon as I lost it, I looked for it everywhere but couldn’t find it. A few weeks later, I found it in a completely unexpected place. Here in Matthew 8, a man searches for that something missing in his life and finds it in the person of Christ-an unexpected place.
We see a quality here that was unusual for a Gentile during Jesus’ ministry on earth. As a Roman centurion, this man was in a position of high authority, yet he had character and fulfilled his duties. He’d already tried the idol worship and pagan ceremonies of Rome and realized that something was missing.
He cared enough for his sick servant to come to Christ in humility and faith. He understood Jesus Christ was God in the flesh-the Creator of the universe-the One who had the power to do anything.
This centurion was open to believing that Jesus was the Son of God. He was an ordinary, humble man searching for the truth. He found life’s answers in the person of Jesus Christ. His actions showed humility when he submitted himself to Christ. May we all learn how to cultivate such a spirit of humility.
