Today’s Scripture: These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33

Over the past two decades, there has been a worldwide phenomenon of the resurgence of an old World War II poster. Originally designed by the British Ministry of Information, the poster reads, “Keep Calm and Carry On.” These iconic words, discovered in an English bookshop in the late 1990’s, now hang as inspirational posters in homes and businesses and grace the fronts of T-shirts and coffee cups all over the Western World. They are a leftover relic attributed to Winston Churchill. Oddly enough, this war poster never made it into production and yet these words from the ever stoic Prime Minister are still comforting the troubled masses in light of present-day uncertainties stemming from the ever present threat of terrorism.

What I fail to understand as a Christian is how the tiny nation of Great Britain found hope and strength in the words of a flawed human being while facing the very real possibility of defeat at the hands of a maniac named Hitler.  Meanwhile, so many Christians today look at the events of the world around them and live as if there is no hope. They cower in fear and trepidation at every event, every broadcast, and every twitter feed. The hopes and dreams of victory of Great Britain and Europe over fascism were tentative at best. Yet millions found strength and trust in the words of a man.

How infinitely greater is our assured victory over both sin and the present evil of this world in the Person of Jesus Christ! Our victory as believers in Jesus Christ is as assured as the rising and the setting of the sun. We can and should live in confidence of the victory that has already been won by Christ over this world’s evil and over our own personal sin through the shedding of His blood on the cross of Calvary. Christian, there is no need to live in fear. We are already victors in Christ Jesus our Lord. So, Keep Calm and Carry On ‘til our Lord’s return!
