Today’s Scripture:  Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Hebrews 13:8

Not long ago, I visited the 86-year-old father of one of our dear church ladies. His name is Dale. He had undergone emergency surgery the previous evening. It took 5.5 hours to put in a new hip, replacing the replacement hip he had received about 20 years ago.

Though he was in great pain, he smiled when my wife, Julie, and I walked into his room. He gave us a firm handshake. He said, “It’s all about the grace of God.” He had told his family the night before that he was ready to see Jesus if he didn’t make it through the operation. Dale knows God so well from the past that he is perfectly at peace trusting God for the present and future.

In the same way, because Jesus doesn’t change and He was good to us yesterday, we can be confident that He will be good to us today and tomorrow. Dale radiated confidence in a good God. I love being around people like that. A person who walks with God cheers up others, even if he is the one in the hospital bed. I’ve experienced that many times before on hospital visits, but the visit with Dale was truly special because the depth of his love for Jesus was so obvious.

How can you be a Dale?

Know Jesus. Experience his faithfulness and grace today. Walk with Him long enough, and you’ll find that He’s good, true, and reliable.

During that visit, Dale said one more thing I’ll never forget. He said, “The only reason to look back is to see the grace of God.” When you look back over a life walked with Jesus, you’ll be able to say the same thing.
