Today’s Scripture: There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12
Is it possible to have real morality without God? I believe the answer is absolutely not! If we don’t believe in God, then our morality is subjective; it is not absolute. Morality then becomes what we think is right or what society says is right. As we see in today’s verse, that way leads to death.
We need an objective basis for morality. The Bible gives us that basis. In Genesis, it says that God created man and woman in the image of God. We are made in the image of God morally in three ways:
- We were created in righteousness.
- We were created in innocence.
- We were a reflection of God’s holiness.
Everyone has a conscience. Deep down we know that if someone takes something which isn’t theirs, it is wrong. How do we innately know that something is right and something is wrong? The answer is because we were made in the image of God, and He has created in us a conscience.
We were made in God’s image, and He is holy. Therefore, we know what is right and what is wrong. Now, we can try and suppress this feeling that something is not right. Then it may feel less and less wrong, but deep down we know that it is wrong.
God is the basis for what is right and wrong. He has told us through our conscience, through the convicting of the Spirit, and through His Word what is good and what is evil. Without God, there is no real morality.
