Today’s Scripture: For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself. Philippians 3:20-21
I enjoy traveling to other countries. I have been to Israel many times and have visited several other countries in Asia and Africa on mission trips. However, as enjoyable as those trips may be, there is something about coming home to the United States. I love it when the customs worker stamps my passport and says, “Mr. Scudder, welcome back to the United States.”
My earthly citizenship is here in the United States of America. According to Scripture, however, my spiritual citizenship is in Heaven. That is what we see in our passage today. The word “conversation” does not mean we are talking to each other in Heaven. It is an old English word that means “commonwealth” or “the country to whom we belong.”
On this earth, it is like we are living in tents. It has been said that we should not put our tent stakes too deep because we are only sojourning here. When Abraham came into the land of Canaan, he was not a permanent occupant at that point. The nation of Israel still had to go down to Egypt and then return to the land of Canaan.
We have the same picture – our citizenship is not in this world. It is in Heaven. We are looking and waiting for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our broken down, vile bodies into bodies like His perfect, glorious body. We will be like Him. The only difference will be that His body will have the nail-scars of sin and our bodies will not.
Believer, if you are not looking forward to that day, you need to be. Take some time today to talk with the Lord and ask Him to help you look forward to His return.
