Today’s Scripture: Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:24
I had been working for a year as the janitor at the Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church when Dr. Scudder asked if I’d like to help his son, Jim, start a TV program. I jumped at the opportunity, relishing the challenge. My job was to research the TV equipment needed, buy it and use it with other great people to get the Quentin Road Bible Hour (later called Victory In Grace, now called InGrace) on the air.
In the process of being the editor of InGrace for 9 years, I was able to travel to the Philippines, Thailand, India, and Israel and help create TV programs in those locations. I was blessed to hear hundreds of great sermons that helped me learn the Bible even better. I was having fun!
Then I was called on to manage the print department and to buy airtime for InGrace. I coordinated teams of volunteers to answer hundreds of phone calls each week, sharing the clear gospel. Then I received special training to help Christians plan their estates, using trusts and other tools that avoided taxes and provided more to their children and more to the Lord’s work.
I loved what I was doing. I counted it a privilege to wake up every day and make an eternal difference with dedicated people.
Then God opened the door for me to pastor in eastern Ohio. We received godly counsel and it was clear He wanted us to go. Yet, it was scary because we had an 11-year old and a 14-year old. We were taking them from their friends, their school, and theirports teams. I was concerned the move would be hard for them. Yet Jesus said, “If any man serve me, let him follow me…” It was clear He wanted us to go, so we went.
Moving to Ohio turned out to be the single greatest thing we could have done for our children, because it’s what God wanted. Our kids became personally invested in the ministry. This wasn’t my ministry, it was ours.
God has used every experience of my life as preparation for the next. I like this stage. I would love to pastor this great church in Ohio until the Lord returns! Through everything, the One who called us is the faithful One Who will do it (1 Thessalonians 5:24). He just wants us to be faithful and obedient.
