Today’s Scripture: And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, this is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21

We all know what the letters GPS stand for, but what about GPWS? The GPWS, Ground Proximity Warning System, is built into every aircraft. This system uses radar to measure the distance from the aircraft to the ground which alerts the pilot with a visual warning of flashing lights as well as an auditory warning of: “Pull up, pull up-terrain”. When heeded the GPWS prevents the aircraft from flying into the side of a mountain or blazing through a random field for a landing.

Although most people acknowledged that this system is crucial, there were some who felt that they did not need to pay attention to it. They felt they had full control over the situation…right up until the moment their negligence cost them and their passengers their lives. One such example is the plane crash that resulted in the death of the President of Poland and many others. The pilots of that aircraft were trying to land in bad weather conditions and ignored the GPWS warning. Another example of an avoidable disaster that occurred was that of a brand new airplane in Indonesia. On a demonstration flight taken to impress prospective clients, the pilots turned off the warning system because it was annoying them. This action resulted in the aircraft flying into a volcano, killing all on board.

As a believer facing real life situations, is there such a system that could warn us of impending disaster in our Christian lives to keep us from harming ourselves and others? Well, we already have one built into the very fiber of our being. Isaiah 30:21 refers to the voice of God and his spirit resting upon us. God has created each of us with an innate sense of what is right and wrong. It is preprogrammed into our souls. Also, when we trust Christ, the Holy Spirit indwells us and convicts us. So, how do we stay in communication with the Lord so that we know when to pull up?

  • Understand how serious sin is – it’s what nailed Christ to the cross (Colossians 1:20, 22)
  • Purpose in your heart to not defile yourself (Mark 7:20-23)
  • Know what God has to say (Psalm 37:31)
  • Meditate on God’s Word (Joshua 1:8)
  • Be watchful and prayerful (Matthew 26:41)

Today, heed God’s warning to pull up. Only then will you be able to soar above life’s obstacles.
