Today’s Scripture: Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. John 6:47

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have…”

There are a lot of earthly goods that we can consider to be valuable possessions. For some it is gold or jewelry; for others those things can be cars or sports memorabilia. My uncle has a baseball signed and given to him by a former Chicago Cubs manager. Several years ago, our Christian school was given a basketball signed by the entire Boston Celtics team. The basketball is old enough now that the signatures are starting to fade.

The thing about earthly possessions is that they wear out, fade and are eventually destroyed. I have a friend who, whenever he drives past a junkyard, likes to say, “Those rusty cars were once someone’s pride and joy.” If we’re smart, we will invest in eternal treasures that will never rust out or fade away.

The greatest eternal possession that we can have is eternal life. This eternal life is not just life that will never end, but it will be an abundant life spent forever with the Greatest One Who made it all possible.

The best thing about this greatest possession is that it is absolutely free. You don’t have to enter a sweepstakes, nor do you have to stand in a line for several hours. Wherever you are, you can receive the free gift of eternal life by placing your faith and trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Then, as our passage today reminds us, you “hath” everlasting life. Right now, you will possess the greatest possession ever.
