Today’s Scripture:  As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10

Fiorello H. LaGuardia1 was a beloved mayor of New York City. One day, he decided to show up in the night court of one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city. He dismissed the judge and took the seat becoming the judge of the night court. The first case brought before him was a very tattered, old lady. Her crime was that she stole a loaf of bread. He asked her about it and she confessed to taking the bread. Then she exclaimed that her daughter’s husband had left them and her daughter was sick. She had no way of feeding her grandchildren, so she took the bread. LaGuardia told the woman that by her own confession she was guilty of stealing so she had to be either fined $10 or spend 10 days in jail. As he was saying this to her, he pulled out his wallet and pulled out $10. Next, He threw it in his famous sombrero hat that he would wear. He then declared to the woman that he had paid her fine, and furthermore that he was going to fine everyone in the courthouse 50 cents for “the privilege of living in a neighborhood that allows old grandmothers to have to steal to feed the grandkids.” The hat was passed and all the people who were there each put in their 50 cents. So La Guardia ended up giving the lady $47.50 that night. All the people that had to pay the fine stood up and gave LaGuardia a standing ovation.

In the same way, God did that to us. We were guilty of much worse than stealing a loaf of bread, and the “fine” God paid for us was much more than $10. He paid our death sentence and gives us blessings beyond just paying our debt. That is the wonderful truth of God’s grace!
