Today’s Scripture: Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

The jury slowly walked back into the courtroom. The defendant waited anxiously to hear what they would say.

“Have you reached a verdict?” the judge asked.

“Yes,” the foreman answered. “We find the defendant, not guilty.”

Just about every day, judges, jury members, and board members are asked to listen to the facts and determine what the correct course of action should be. This is the scene from whence today’s scripture verses are presented. These are King Solomon’s concluding remarks as he looks over and evaluates everything that happens during life.

He sees the joys and the sorrows of life and declares it all vanity. In the grand scheme of things, this life doesn’t matter. Whatever happens in our life, whether it be good or bad, will soon be past since our lives are truly a vapor. Having been blessed by God with wisdom, riches, and fame, Solomon looks back and says everything in this life is for naught.

Having considered everything that he has seen in his life, Solomon proclaims that the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep his commandments. Amassing riches and power will mean nothing when we stand before God one day. God will judge each work whether it be good or evil. The way to avoid loss when we stand before Him, is to live each day in accordance to His Word. If we live with a proper fear of God, it will help us to do what is right. Ask God to help you realize that everything else in life is vanity.
