Today’s Scripture: For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

There was once a preacher who stood and preached on the same street corner week after week. Each time he did, there was a homeless man there. Filthy and vile, he mocked every word the preacher said, yet, he constantly asked for a Bible. The preacher refused the request because he knew the vagrant only wanted it to roll up his cigarettes with the pages. Finally one day, the preacher had a brilliant thought. He turned to the homeless man and said, “I will give you a Bible if you make me a promise. You will read the entire chapter before you roll your cigarettes up with the pages. Not long afterwards, the man disappeared. Four months later a very well-polished gentleman came up in a suit.

He put his arm around the preacher and said, “I know you probably don’t recognize me, but I was the homeless man-the one you gave the Bible to.”

Astonished the preacher responded, “But, what happened to you?!”

“Well, I smoked Matthew, Mark, and Luke, and then John smoked me.”

This is why we should be in the Word. Hearing the words of God were powerful enough to lead us to place our trust in His saving grace. And, they are strong enough to keep us on the right path, to keep our feet from slipping in the mire that we tread through each day. His word is quick and powerful. The words of God are not dead words, they are living creatures that have hands and feet. The same sword of the Scripture that cuts is the same sword that surgically heals. The only thing that changes people is the word of God because it is the only source that can give distinction as to what is carnal and what is spiritual. The Word of God can accomplish so much in our Christian lives if we simply take the time to open it and be receptive to what it has to say.

You may not feel like picking up the Living Word of God today, but you need it more than you know, and it will help you far more than you can ever fathom. The truth is that you have a quick and powerful sword ready to help you with your spiritual battle today. The choice is yours as to whether or not you want to use it.
