Today’s Scripture: Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Matthew 5:15, 16
Many years have passed since people lit candles on trees, but the fact remains that Christmas lights are a favorite part of Christmas Day. We have driven and walked through neighborhoods just to take in the beautiful sight of glowing Christmas lights. A few years ago, we lived in a neighborhood that took the Christmas light tradition so seriously that one neighbor got upset with me because I put up my lights before he did. I lit them up first thing the day after Thanksgiving. When he asked me how I got the jump on him, I said, “Well, you were just a little slow. I put mine up three years ago, and every day after Thanksgiving all I do is reach down and plug them in. My Christmas lights are always ready to go.”
Do we take our light seriously as believers? God Himself has entrusted us with a radiant truth and a glorious gospel light. The world in which we live is dark and shrouded by sin, ignorance, evil, and blindness. We are to be light showing the way to those searching and stumbling in the dark. No matter how politically charged or anti-God our nation may become, we are to let our light shine bright.
The best Christmas lights are not found at the most prestigious house in the neighborhood, downtown Chicago, on HGTV’s holiday lightshow, or even on the menorah in the Holy City. Christ is the greatest Light, and He shines through His children. Truthfully, Christians are the best light display the world will ever see.
Friend, are your Christmas lights always ready to go? Today and every day, you have been given the honor of being a light for Christ. Determine to shine bright. What a wonderful time of year to purpose in your heart to go light your world. Merry Christmas and God bless.
