Convicted and Reproved – Jim Scudder, Jr.

Today’s Scripture: And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Romans 12:2

Have you ever seen canned dog food? Whatever is inside the can comes slurping out and looks exactly like the can – it even has the grooves of the can shaped into it. If you are seeking the world’s approval, if you are seeking people’s approval, then that is what you are going to end up with. The world is trying to conform you.

God wants you to be transformed by the renewing of your mind. When we worry about what God wants in our lives, it eliminates most or all of this unnecessary guilt that we put on ourselves.

How do we renew our mind? By hearing the truth of the Word of God in church, by spending time alone with God in His Word. It happens when you are thinking about the things of God and the things He wants you to be. God has told us how to live and act. As we remember those things, we are processing the thoughts of God, and He is using those things to transform us.

This world lives under a huge weight of guilt, but the Christian should live guilt-free. We have something that replaces guilt, and we call it the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

In John 16, Jesus talks about the Comforter that is coming. He said that after He left the earth, the Holy Spirit would come. Ever since that time, all those that have received the gift of eternal life have God in them through the Spirit of God. We are the Temple of the Holy Ghost. Until that day of redemption, the Spirit of God is in us.

One of the jobs of the Spirit of God in us is conviction. It tells us that the Holy Spirit reproves. That word reprove is the idea of convicting us, of bringing to light things that are true. This is what we need and should want in our Christian life. It is not guilt; it is conviction. Guilt is condemnation.

I don’t know how many times I have been talking to someone after a church service and they told me that God used something I said to really convict them. That is the glory of knowing God, reading about Him, and learning about Him. There is conviction.
